Borrowing from the legend of King Arthur, the film's magical realism blends built sets with CGI animation, to illustrate the character's journey from suburban bedroom down a hallway growing thick with vines and finally crossing the threshold of a portal into the forest lair of the beast he must confront. Working with production designer Etta Lillienthal and our carpenter and scenic painter, we installed and dressed the magical portal in the real forest for a night shoot. Gyllenhaal, starring Jason Biggs (AMERICAN PIE), Lauren Ambrose (SIX FEET UNDER), and Joel David Moore (AVATAR). Based on a true story and set in Seattle in 2000, I was the Set Decorator, working with Production Designer Laurie Hicks. Our design challenge was to turn back the clock by a decade and recreate real locations from the turn of the millennium during a political campaign for the Seattle City Council.
